The North Shore Animal League will be assisting with its van, transporting 20 or so animals.

The NJHS is a local volunteer, nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter. In addition to trying to find forever homes for animals, it will collect much-needed donations and monetary funds.

Donated funds are used for spay/neuter, food and vet bills. All donations are tax-deductible. Currently, the cost to run the small facility is over $13,000 per month, plus another $10,000 in vet bills. Volunteers plan many events throughout the year.

The shelter is also in need of a larger facility, and an anonymous donor recently donated $25,000. To donate, make checks payable to North Jersey Humane Society and note "new shelter." Donations can be mailed to NJHS, P.O. Box 1172, Fort Lee, NJ 07020.

The shelter also works on public education -- including about mircrochipping and spay/neuter -- and it has animal control professionals to assist in rescue efforts in North Jersey.

Volunteers are also greatly welcome at the shelter. "Working with animals and helping out in various areas, is worth its weight in gold," organizers note. "Seeing these animals find their forever home always leaves a paw print on your heart."

Particular needs include dog walking, fundraising, marketing, special events, kennel cleaning and fostering.

In addition to donating or volunteering, you can also sponsor a homeless pet's care. You can cancel this at any time or continue with another animal. Sponsorships are also tax deductible.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, outside Jack's Foodtown. The store is located at 1466 Rt. 23 North, in Wayne. The last event here produced many adoptions, interests and people later visiting the shelter to adopt.

Visit the NJHS' website for more information. You can also fill out an application to adopt a pet there, or call 201-945-0649. For additional information on the event or Jack’s Super Foodtown, call 973-696-1977.
