States with strong environmental reputations that many may have expected to do well -- like Vermont, Washington, Oregon and Minnesota -- did outperform most others, but the tri-state area ranked quite well also with Connecticut, New York and New Jersey all ranking in the top 10.

Connecticut led the way locally, finishing seventh on the list of overall rankings. New York followed at number eight while New Jersey rounded out the top 10 of Wallethub's list.

On the surface, the finance website took into account such factors as environmental quality, eco-friendly behaviors and climate change contributions. Delving deeper, the site took into account water quality, air quality, soil quality, per capita energy consumption and a host of the environmental markers.
