According to the National Retail Federation, 65.5 percent of Americans will take part in some kind of barbecue, cookout or picnic, spending an average of $73.42.

Last year, says a report by Nielsen, Americans spent the most on chicken and beef -- approximately $389 million on both food categories. Folks also spent $116 million on cherries, $114 million on salad and $83 million on watermelon.

And let's not forget the beer. Keeping to a patriotic theme, revelers chose American over foreign with 61 million cases of domestic beer consumed compared to 10.7 million cases of imported beer.
