PATERSON, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Joseph Robert Cunningham Jr. of Paterson and Saddle Brook.
The first baseman and outfielder was born Aug. 27, 1931 and turns 85 on Saturday.
He signed a contract at age 17 with the St. Louis Cardinals after graduating from Lodi High School, where he played for the Rams. Saddle Brook didn't have a high school when he lived there.
He played for the Cardinals in 1954; and 1956–61. He also played with the Chicago White Sox (1962–64), and Washington Senators (1964–66).
Cunningham also was the Cardinals coach, manager and executive. He was a coach on Whitey Herzog’s staff when the team won the 1982 World Series.
His son, Joe III, also played in the minors for the Cardinals and later coached and managed in the organization.
The St. Louis Cardinals dedicated an area of the ballpark adjacent to the UMB Champions Club called Cunningham Corner.
