WAYNE, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Gene Mayer, former tennis great, who turns 60 this Monday, April 11.

Mayer was born in Flushing, Queens, but grew up in Wayne. At Wayne Valley High School, he was unbeaten during his two years on the team.

Mayer won 14 singles titles in his career, and he reached World No. 4 on the ATP Tour -- the Association of Tennis Professionals -- in 1980. His brother also played professionally, reaching No. 7 in 1982. The two sometimes played against each other, and with each other, winning five doubles tournaments together.

He is the president of Two Handed Enterprises, a sports marketing firm.
