Loud Booming Sounds In Fair Lawn Still A Mystery

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Folks in Fair Lawn were still trying to figure out Friday what made the loud noises being heard around town at night over the previous week.

Fair Lawn Mayor John Cosgrove said the theory of blown electrical transformers from a power substation in Paterson has been debunked by PSE&G officials, who called him Friday morning following a Daily Voice story about the situation on Thursday.

Police say they have received several calls about the loud noise since Sunday, but have so far been unable to pinpoint the source.

"We don't know, but there hasn't been any damage and nobody has been hurt," Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler told Daily Voice. "There is nothing more we can go on at this point until somebody hears it and calls."

Metzler said the department received a call from somebody claiming to have heard the sound on Sunday night from the area of Lambert Road and Second Street. Another caller Monday night reported hearing the noise from the area of Bellair Avenue and Second Street.

Many have posited their own theories on Facebook:

"It sounds like someone has dropped something big and metal into an empty dumpster," wrote Aimee Raffiani.

"Frost quakes?" asked Donald J. DeBruin.

"I think it's an alien thing..." added Wayne Robbins.
