PARAMUS, N.J. — World War II Veteran Milton Schuchard of Paramus was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal Tuesday during a ceremony at the Cupola Assisted Living Facility in Paramus.

The Paterson native, 93, was recognized for his service in the Civil Air Patrol, a civilian auxiliary division of the Air Force that used its own aircraft to patrol the U.S. coastline during World War II.

"These guys flew up and down our coast keeping an eye out for German U-Boats," said Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera, who was joined by U.S. Representative Scott Garrett and Civil Air Patrol active members in honoring Schuchard.

"Today we take national security for granted," the mayor said. "But roll the clock back 70 years and it was a real threat.

"These people took it upon themselves to protect the homeland and they truly had an effect on the outcome of the war."
