After her daughter was born, she made cookies for special occasions like her baptism and first birthday.

“Then, when she went to school, more and more people saw the work that I did and were like, ‘Oh, you should sell those,'” Braun recalled.

Braun said she took their advice, and started taking “little orders here and there.”

But it wasn’t until she was laid off from her fulltime job as a sales executive in the fashion industry that she got serious about cookie baking.

“I decided, well, if I was ever going to take a chance now is the time to do it,” said Braun, an Old Tappan native.

Braun launched her business – Mimi’s Cookies – and now she and a staff of helpers create customized cookies out of a Waldwick storefront boutique.

“My favorite part is creating, doing new designs and just putting platters together,” she said. “I love the creative part of it.”

The job can get stressful – especially around the holidays. But, Braun said, “as stressful as it is, the creativity counteracts all those crazy deadlines.”

Mimi’s Cookies also hosts birthday parties, will be holding a summer camp for kids, and gives private cookie decorating lessons.
