Joaquin Strengthens, Effects In Area Should Start Friday

PASSAIC, N.J. -- Hurricane Joaquin has been upgraded to a Category 4, and seems to be veering east, bringing much uncertainty to the impact it will have along the East Coast., according to The Weather Channel.

Hurricane Joaquin has been upgraded to a Category 4, with wind speeds of up to 140 mph, making it the strongest hurricane of the season.

Meteorologist are stressing that even if the hurricane goes out to the east, they can't rule out any direct impacts to the East Coast, and all residents should still be prepared for high winds and flooding.

Flood warnings are currently in effect from the Carolinas to Connecticut through Saturday, due to a surge of moisture that's leading the storm, reported the Washington Post.

Gov. Chris Christie has declared a State of Emergency for Southern New Jersey, due to heavy rains and saturated soil. The state's Department of Health has already reached out to hospitals, senior care centers, and other facilities to ensure they are prepared for the storm, according to The Weather Channel.
