PATERSON, N.J. — St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson sent letters to past heart surgery patients that infected equipment may cause health complications or even death, New Jersey News 12 reports .

An infection called non-tuberculosis Mycobacterium may have contaminated equipment frequently used during open heart surgeries, according to News 12.

St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center has used the equipment in question for the past several years but has not reported any infections.
