Former Paterson Police Officer Of 33 Years, Louis John DeOld, Dies At 70

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Louis John DeOld -- a longtime resident of Fair Lawn and officer with the Paterson Police Department -- died on Sunday, Jan. 22. He was 70. 

Born and raised in Paterson, DeOld had lived in Fair Lawn since 1971. "A proud Army veteran of the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, he was a Purple Heart recipient and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with 'V' Device for Heroism in Vietnam," information from the funeral home noted.

He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of master sergeant. Before he retired, he served as a police officer with the City of Paterson from 1969 to 2002.

DeOld is survived by his children, Craig and his wife Laura DeOld, and Pamela and her husband Richard Anderson; grandchildren Colin, Sophie, John and Daniel; and siblings Kathryn Bloetjes, John DeOld and George DeOld. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Elseth D. (Dotter) DeOld, and his parents, Herman and Betty DeOld. 

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Rd., in Fair Lawn. The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Wrightstown.
