NORTH HALEDON, N.J. -- John A. De Vries, 95, of North Haledon, died Friday, Jan. 1, at the Holland Christian Home.
Born in Paterson, De Vries had been a resident of North Haledon since 1959. He was a self-employed building contractor, retiring in 1985.
He served as choir director at Fourth CRC/Faith Community CRC. He was a member of the former Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Paterson, where he served as an elder, and more recently was a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff. He was a member of the Cathedral Choir for more than 75 years.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth (nee Botbyl); his children, John A. Jr. (Linda), George P. (Nancy), Ronald J., Marilyn K. Bruining (Henry), Lois A. Schipper (Steven), Laura J. De Vries, David J. (Shelly) and Timothy P. (Denise); 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; and his sister Radia “Dolly” Hoogerhyde.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Minnie “Mickey” (nee Bokma), in 1985; two brothers; and three sisters.
The De Vries family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Chapel of the Holland Christian Home, 151 Graham Ave., North Haledon. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Community Christian Reformed Church, 530 Sicomac Ave., Wyckoff. Interment will be private at the Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to The Holland Christian Home.
