Joseph Tann, 37, who was struck in the head, died while in emergency surgery at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, city Police Director Jerry Speziale said.

He and 24-year-old Tyrus Odom were sitting outside Tann's home near the corner of Pearl and Summer streets when they were ambushed just before midnight, he said.

The investigation remained active, Speziale said, as did those into a series of shootings the past few weeks that recently claimed the lives of two other victims while wounding 16 others.

"Detectives Ricardo Vazquez and Martin Luizzi, along with Detectives Paul Wefing and Sabrina McKoy of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office (PCPO), responded to the scene and then followed up with the victims and their families at [the hospital]," the director said.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact any of the detectives at (973) 321-1120.
