Kenneth Smith, 36 of Paterson, was charged with aggravated arson and possession of a prohibited weapon, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said. A judge ordered him held in the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance Monday in Central Judicial Court following his arrest Friday.

No injuries were reported in the June 27 blaze, which occurred while the Maple Avenue building was vacant, authorities said at the time.

"Someone who was at the bar up the street says he saw someone throw something through the window," Mayor John Cosgrove told Daily Voice.

The building sustained fire damage to the office area, as well as smoke and water damage, he said, adding that firefighters knocked down the blaze within 10 minutes.
