Fair Lawn Man Ordered Held On $250G Bail In Beating Of Girlfriend's Pal

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- A judge ordered a Fair Lawn man held on $250,000 bail after the condition of a friend of his girlfriend whom he’d beaten a week ago became critical, authorities said Friday.

Steven Duckack, 59, assaulted the victim when he arrived at Duckack’s Smith Avenue apartment to pick up the woman just after 5:30 p.m. Sept 23, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

“During the assault, the victim sustained facial injuries and later required emergency medical attention,” he said.

He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where “his condition steadily worsened,” the proseucotr said.

As of late Friday afternoon, he was listed in critical condition, Grewal said.

Duckack, who was arrested Wednesday by members of the prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit and Fair Lawn police, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his initial court appearance.

He remained held in the Bergen County Jail.
