PATERSON, N.J. -- A specialized unit from the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office was investigating the overnight death of a Paterson man during what witnesses said was a 5th Ward shootout with police.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at Cedar and Summer streets when the gunman began shooting at officers who returned fire, authorities said.
The officers were brought to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for trauma evaluation, responders said.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes asked that anyone with information that could help her Shooting Response Team's investigation call 1-877-370-PCPO or email: email@example.com.
The specialized team responds to all police-involved shooting deaths, under state law.
