PATERSON, N.J. – A Hackensack drunk driver who registered more than three times the legal limit was charged with death by auto for the death of a passenger ejected during a series of crashes in which his sedan struck 11 other vehicles last month in Paterson, authorities said Friday.

Authorities will ask that Aaron Burton, 33, remain held in the Passaic County Jail at a detention hearing Sunday, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said.

Detectives arrested Burton on Friday in connection with the 3:40 a.m. incident Sept. 9 in the area of 135 East 18th Street.

Police found Burton’s 2008 Crown Victoria in the road with extensive damage caused by hitting cars on both sides of the street while speeding, Valdes said.

Both he and 32-year-old Justin Demmie, also of Hackensack, were ejected and sustained serious injuries, the prosecutor said.

Antonio Clark, 35, of Teaneck, was also injured, she said.

Demmie succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson at 4:16 a.m., Valdes said.

Burton was treated for his injuries at St. Joseph’s and was discharged four days later.

Burton registered a 0.213% alcohol level, Valdes said.

He was charged with death by auto while DWI, death by auto, assault by auto causing serious injury and DWI, among several other offenses.
