Haledon Man, 65, Struck, Killed Outside Paterson Dunkin Donuts

PATERSON, N.J. – A 65-year-old Haledon man was struck and killed Thursday night outside a Paterson Dunkin Donuts, authorities said.

The victim was struck just outside the Dunkin Donuts at the intersection of Route 20 and East 33rd Street around 7 p.m.

Jose Furtado was struck by a 1999 GMC Savana van on store property near the intersection of Route 20 and East 33rd Street around 7 p.m., authorities said.

Neither the 59-year-old van driver -- who also is from Haledon -- nor his passenger, a 15-year-old Paterson boy, were injured, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Deputy Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a joint statement.

Furtado was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where he succumbed to his injuries about a half-hour later.

No criminal charges were immediately filed or summonses issued, they said, adding that an investigation was continuing.
