PATERSON, N.J. – A 65-year-old Haledon man was struck and killed Thursday night outside a Paterson Dunkin Donuts, authorities said.

Jose Furtado was struck by a 1999 GMC Savana van on store property near the intersection of Route 20 and East 33rd Street around 7 p.m., authorities said.

Neither the 59-year-old van driver -- who also is from Haledon -- nor his passenger, a 15-year-old Paterson boy, were injured, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Deputy Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a joint statement.

Furtado was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where he succumbed to his injuries about a half-hour later.

No criminal charges were immediately filed or summonses issued, they said, adding that an investigation was continuing.

They also asked that anyone who witnessed the crash, or has information that could help the investigation, contact authorities through a tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org . Or call the Paterson Police Detective Traffic Bureau: (973) 321-1112 .
