PATERSON, N.J. -- A city man who admitted stabbing his girlfriend to death was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison, NorthJersey.com reported.

Kerry Richardson, 26, who pleaded guilty to murder and violating a restraining order, will have to serve at least 34 years before he can be paroled, the story said.

Richardson walked to the woman’s apartment with a kitchen knife, pushed his way in when Katera Robinson answered the door, then stabbed her at least 10 times and fled, NorthJersey.com said.

Richardson has a history of mental health problems, including bipolar disorder, depression and a history of suicide attempts, according to NorthJersey.com.
