Officers Joseph Royce and Jason Katz were on patrol when they tried to stop the car at the intersection of Godwin Avenue and Carroll Street around 11:30 a.m., Sheriff Richard Berdnik said.

Thiago Santos, 26, hit the gas instead, he said.

He got only as far as Hamilton Avenue when the pursuit ended, the sheriff said.

Santos as charged with theft, receiving stolen, property, eluding and resisting arrest, Berdnik said. He also received summonses for driving while suspended, reckless driving, failing to stop for an emergency vehicle and improper passing.

He also had two outstanding warrants -- one from Haledon and the other from Glen Rock, the sheriff said.
