Amaury Sanchez, 34, of Passaic has a history of drug offenses, Detective Andrew White said.

Officers spotted Sanchez driving a Nissan south on Main Street around 4:40 a.m., White said. They tried stopping him near Main Street and Lafayette Avenue but he took off onto Route 21.

“He abruptly stopped his vehicle on the ramp to Route 3 west, jumped over the guard rail and ran towards a wooded area" before he was caught, White said.

Clifton police assisted.

Sanchez was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, resisting arrest and hindering by flight. He also received four motor vehicle summonses, White said.

Bail hadn't been set as of early Wednesday afternoon, he said.
