Passaic Sheriff's Detectives Nab 8 In Countywide Prostitution Sweep

PATERSON, N.J -- They come from Queens and were working in massage parlors and hotel rooms in Clifton, Totowa and Paterson, said Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik, whose detectives posed as clients to arrest eight woman on prostitution charges.

A coordinated sweep organized by his department also netted nearly $7,000 in alleged proceeds, the sheriff said.

The quality-of-life operation included other agencies: The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office assigned special detectives to assist any human trafficking victims, while the Liberation Way Drug and Rehabilitation Center offered a substance abuse counselor, Michael Sarubbi, Berdnik said.

Yingyu Xuan, 60, was charged with promoting prostitution and 44-year-old Xuemei Zhao with prostitution out of 169 Union Blvd. in Totowa. Both are from Queens, Berdnik said.

Fengqing Zhang, 44, was charged with promoting prostitution and Fengping Zhang, 42, with prostitution following a sting at 848 Main Street in Paterson, the sheriff said. Both are also from Queens.

So are Xiuyun Chen, 35, who was charged with promoting prostitution, and both 40-year-old Tinglu Sun and Maria Bordamalo-Poveda, 30, who were charged with prostition -- all out of the Howard Johnson's on westbound Route 3 in Clifton, Berdnik said.

A Bronx woman, Daniela Asencion, 38, was charged with prostitution after being arrested 521 Van Houten Avenue in Clifton, he added.

All were released pending court appearances. Authorities also seized the cash for possible forfeiture.
