PATERSON, N.J. -- A 20-year-old Paterson man who told police he was shot by another man during an argument on a city street was lying, authorities said: He shot himself.
Trevaughn Johnson was charged with weapons offenses following an extensive investigation by Detective Michael Quinones and Prosecutor’s Detective Ricardo Ferreira of the Ceasefire Unit, Police Director Jerry Speziale said Thursday.
Police who went to the trauma center of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center Tuesday afternoon were told that Johnson was in the area of Harris Place and 7th Avenue near the Riverside housing development when the gunman approached him, Speziale said.
During an ensuing argument, Johnson said he was shot in the leg, the director said.
Johnson was being held in the Passaic County Jail pending a bail hearing. Meanwhile, the investigation into the shooting was continuing.
Speziale asked that anyone who saw something or has information that could help the investigation call Quinones or Ferreira at (973) 321-1342. Information can also be forwarded anonymously by accessing the Paterson police website at patersonpd.com, he said.
