PATERSON, N.J. – The shooting of a 22-year-old Paterson man over the weekend became a homicide when he died overnight Monday at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

Kasiem L. McCaskill, was struck several times at 3:45 a.m. Sunday in the area of Caroll and Harrison streets, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief William Fraher jointly announced Monday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Monday, they said.

Authorities asked that anyone with information that could help identify the shooter contact Paterson police at (973) 321-1111 or Senior Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Joshua Vazquez at (973) 837-7622 .

Valdes and Fraher’s detectives were already investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old city man on North Main Street overnight Friday into Saturday.

Among other things, they were trying to determine whether warfare among rival drug gangs was responsible.

As of late Sunday, 13 shootings were reported in the city in a span of a little over three weeks -- increasing this year's total to 53.
