Ryszard Mieliczek succumbed to his injuries just after 8 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Lt. Daniel Daly said.

Mieliczek was struck by a Ford Econline van driven by a 58-year-old Clifton man on Valley Road at Nellis Drive just before 11 a.m. last Wednesday, Daly said.

John Pontes was turning onto southbound Valley Road from Runnymede Drive when the collision occurred, the lieutenant said. He immediately stopped and remained at the scene, he said.

Pontes -- a longtime venerated track coach -- later received a summons for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Daly said, adding that an investigation was continuing.

Anyone who might have seen the crash and hadn’t spoken with authorities, or has information that could help the investigation, was asked to contact Wayne police: (973) 633-3520. Ask for the Traffic Bureau.
