Uniformed officers were searching for 28-year-old Dwayne Buchanan when the investigators spotted him in the area of West Palisade Avenue and Knickerbocker Road around 8:30 p.m., Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

They approached and idenified themselves and “the chase was on” for several blocks and through backyards, he said.

They caught up to Buchanan nearly a half-mile away, Torell said.

A short time earlier, Buchanan forced his way into a multi-family residence on Knickerbocker Road and began “breaking down the doors of the individual apartments within,” the captain said. “At least one of those apartments was occupied on the second floor of the home.

“The residents, who claimed they didn’t know Buchanan, forced him from their apartment, at which time he went to the third floor and kicked in another door,” Torell said.

He then took off as the residents called 911.

“No one was injured but they were all extremely rattled by the encounter,” Torell said.

Buchanan was being held on $35,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, chargd with burglary, obstruction and resisting arrest.

Detectives, meanwhile, were trying to determine his motive.
