Police: Driver Who Killed Man In Clifton Wrong-Way Route 46 Crash Was Drunk

CLIFTON, N.J. – Authorities on Tuesday identified the motorist killed by a drunk driver headed the wrong way on Route 46 early Monday as 28-year-old Mohamed Khawatmi of Clifton.

Police said Louis Yanez, 32, of Clifton drove a black 2009 Infiniti east in the westbound lanes man when it slammed into a Honda CRV on the highway near the Garden State Parkway at 5 a.m.

Khawatmi was pronounced dead at the scene and a cousin and friend -- Kristian Salmeron, 34, of Garfield, and Gawnna Salous, 22, of Lyndhurst were taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Clifton Police Chief Mark Centurione announced.

A judge ordered Yanez held on $250,000 bail in the Passaic County Jail, charged with death by auto and assault by auto.

He also received summonses for DWI and reckless driving, Valdes and Centurione said.
