CLIFTON, N.J. – A self-employed Turkish immigrant from Clifton who police said was drunk when he smashed up his car collected on the damage by lying to his insurance company, said authorities who arrested him early Monday.
Comert Comertogullari, 37, was charged with “knowingly committing five or more acts of insurance fraud” in the story he gave the insurance company to collect more than $1,000, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said.
Police in Woodland Park arrested Comertogullari after a Sept. 15 crash and charged him with several offenses -- operating a motor vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and refusing to submit to a breath test, Valdes said.
“Those charges were resolved in Woodland Park Municipal Court,” the prosecutor said.
Comertogullari later “made five or more false and/or misleading statements of fact to his insurance company regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash in an attempt to wrongfully collect repair benefits,” she said.
He was released on a court summons.
Valdes asked that anyone with additional information about the incident contact her investigators on the department’s tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or via firstname.lastname@example.org .
