As in most of the shootings, the victim gunned down near the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Summer Street around 2:30 a.m., Sean L. Brittingham Jr. of Paterson, was young -- 21 years old, authorities said.

He was pronounced dead at 3:19 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, authorities said.

More than two dozen other victims have been wounded by gunfire in the late-summer spree of sudden shootings, many of them after midnight and most in areas where drugs are sold.

Authorities have stopped short of blaming a gang war.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office was working with Paterson police to investigate the cold-blooded killings.

The escalating series of shootings made a 19-year-old Paterson man the fifth victim slain in the city over the course of a month when he was gunned down on Sept. 4.

This year, 13 victims have been shot dead, and more than five dozen wounded, in the Silk City.

Anyone with information in any of the shootings is asked to call the Passaic County Prosecutor’s tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org or Detective Ralph Fermin of the Paterson Police Detective Bureau at (973) 321-1120.
