Staroban Louis, 22, was charged with shoplifting and processed at police headquarters Friday when surveillance footage appeared to show him taking $60 worth of toys, from the charity bin on his way out, Capt. Laurence Martin said.
At 10:45 p.m. Sunday, video showed a male with a slender build wearing dark clothing and a hoodie covering his face running toward the municipal complex carrying two objects, then running back to the parking lot, Martin said.
At 11 p.m. a township employee found two 2006 Hess truck boxes propped up against the doors of the police department. On each truck was a handwritten note stating, "Toys were for my 4 year old cousin. Intent wasn't malicious. Apologies," Martin said.
The Wayne employee did not know about the previous thefts and returned the toys to the bins in the lobby, Martin said.
Officers Jon Culic and Corey Stevens found the Hess trucks Tuesday while packing the donations for delivery to Picatinny Arsenal for collection and distribution, Martin said.
The warrant filed for the initial theft of the toys remains active, Martin said.
