The driver, a 68-year-old woman from Fairfield, and the 59-year-old woman who jumped in her trunk were transported to The Valley Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

The driver was backing up to load pet supplies into the hatch when she stepped on the gas instead of the brake, authorities said. The Fair Lawn woman was waiting in the doors to help her, and jumped in the car as it went through the double doors and into the store, Metzler said.

The vehicle stopped when it struck a shelving unit and was completely inside of the building, he said.

The building is not in danger of collapse, authorities said.
