Cuomo’s Chief of Staff Maria Comella is taking a position in the private sector, according to a Politico report, less than seven months after she signed on to head Cuomo’s administration.

Comella made a name for herself nationally while working for Republican politicians Sarah Palin and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. She is expected to stay on the staff through the next “State of the State” address, which is expected early next year.

Cuomo’s choice of Comella surprised many, as she often supported Republican candidates before becoming a consultant for Cuomo approximately a year ago.

“Political party matters less than the things we can accomplish when working together,” Comella said in a statement at the time of her appointment. “At a time of turmoil in Washington, I believe the states can and will play an important role, and Governor Cuomo has the ability to find common ground when it’s needed and get things done.”

No successor or candidates to replace Comella have been announced, though Politico noted that Linda Lacewell, who left Cuomo’s administration in 2016, is set to make a return to the governor’s office.
