CLIFTON, N.J. — Happy birthday to Clifton's Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.
Carter was born May 6, 1937, in Clifton, and died April 20, 2014. He was 76.
The fourth of seven children, Carter spent his youth in and out of trouble after being sent to a juvenile reformatory for assault for stabbing a man when he was 11.
Carter escaped from the reformatory in 1954 and joined the U.S. Army, where he learned to box and did so for the Army.
This spawned his professional boxing career, where he would reach as high as The Ring magazine's No. 3 contender for the middleweight title.
Carter finished his boxing career with a 27-12-1 record with 19 knockouts.
In 1967, Carter was wrongfully convicted of a triple murder in Paterson.
He was freed without bail in November, 1985 at 48 years old.
