Meet Hope: Unofficial Greeter At Pompton Lakes' Rescue

POMPTON LAKES, N.J. – Saturdays and Sundays are visiting and adoption days at the Pompton Lakes cat rescue PATCH, and one of the kitties you'll find waiting to greet you is Hope, a big-eyed calico.

"Hope is just hanging out waiting for the weekend and all the visitors to get here," the rescue group notes.

"Hope is a 1 1/2-year-old dilute calico with beautiful, captivating eyes," Elsebeth Paynter told Daily Voice. "She would love to be someone's one and only."

PATCH stands for Pet Adoption Thru Caring Hands. Kersti Raimondo founded the nonprofit no-kill shelter in the early '90s. Paynter is co-director at the shelter, along with Dorothy Kluchinski, and one of the volunteers who keeps it running.

Hope is spayed, house trained and current on all her vaccinations. She's also "smart, playful and talkative, with a mind of her own," Paynter added.

She believes Hope will fully blossom, in a home that's all hers.

Visitors to PATCH may also notice a facelift in the works – including a new sign, new cages and a paint job – thanks in part to a grant it won from Pompton Lakes' Spectrum Painting.

It's the sixth year of the company's "Paint it Proud" grant program, Spectrum Painting office coordinator Natalie Marsella said. The company donates $5,000 of painting services to an individual or organization in need, nominated by the community through social media.

The colors have all been picked out, and Spectrum employees will be coming in next week to do the painting.

PATCH is located at 26 Lakeside Ave., in Pompton Lakes. Adoption hours are Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 2 p.m. or by appointment.

For more info about Hope or to set up an appointment outside of regular adoption hours, call 973-835-7202 or email patchadoptions@aol.com.
