HALEDON, N.J. -- Frederick Stephen Boerum, 88, of Haledon, died at home Dec. 28.
Boerum attended Power Memorial High School in Manhattan, and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a surgical technician. Later, he attended Florida Southern University in Lakeland, earning a degree in Social Studies. Upon his return, he worked for Brooklyn Union Gas Co. then entered the insurance business, where he later established the Fred Boerum Agency in the late 1960s in Fairlawn, which he operated for almost 45 years.
He also served as president of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Oakland Board of Education at the Valley Middle School. In addition to golf, he also enjoyed baseball, dancing, music and model trains.
He was married to Audrey J. Burton, also from Brooklyn.
Boerum is survived by three children, Stephen Frederick Boerum, William Scott Boerum and Patrice Boerum, Holtz (William); granddaughter Rebecca Katelynn Holtz; and two nieces, Jane Caputo and Veronica Addington.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army or Alzheimer’s Association. A memorial service will take place at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Hawthorne, to be announced at a later date.
