Helen Joustra, 80, Longtime Hawthorne Resident

HAWTHORNE, N.J. -- Helen Joustra -- a Hawthorne resident, formerly of Wyckoff and Midland Park -- died on Tuesday, Sept. 27. She was 80.

Joustra worked for the Vander Plaat Memorial Homes in Paramus, Franklin Lakes and Haledon for many years, before she retired. She was a former member and part-time organist at Irving Park Christian Reformed Church. She has been a longtime member of Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff.

She was also a longtime volunteer at the Corner Closet in Hawthorne and Ditto Upscale Retail in North Haledon.

Joustra is survived by her husband, Martin Bernard "Bernie" Joustra; children Tom Joustra and his wife Laurie, Barbara Gorter and her husband Ronald, David Joustra, and Kristen Vander Plaat and her husband Nicholas; grandchildren Laura, Calvin, Meghan, Anna and her husband Logan, Nicole, Ryan, Sarah, Emily, Erin, Sebi and Samantha; great-granddaughter Sophia; and sister Barbara Couse.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Henry and Roger Jans, and grandson David.

Visiting hours will be from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Rd., in Franklin Lakes. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church, 422 Cedar Hill Ave., in Wyckoff.
