PATERSON, N.J. -- A jitney bus driver from Paterson rang up a whopping $644,804 debt to the Port Authority by not paying tolls at the Hudson River crossings before police arrested him Wednesday morning, officials announced.

The breakout on what Port Authority police said are 9,219 "known" toll-evasion violations by Manuel Aristy Arias, 51, according to the authority's Joseph Pentangelo:

  • $183,904 in unpaid tolls;
  • $460,900 in fees.

PAPD officers took Aristyaris into custody during a special E-ZPass scofflaw detail Wednesday morning, Pentangelo said.

Also charged were two other bus drivers: Elkarmany Somaya of Bayonne, who rang up $24,522 in tolls and fees, and Washington Cevallos-Vega of Union City, who owed a total of $13,389, he said.
