Keith DeVita was in stable condition at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center after officers found him wounded at a multi-family Governor Street residence Wednesday night, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.

"It was determined that the injuries to the victim were the result of an alleged accidental self-infliction, which occurred while the victim was handling a firearm," Speziale said.

As a convicted felon, DeVita wasn't allowed to have a gun.

"The men and women of the special investigations unit are extremely well-versed in their abilities to see situations for what they are and anyone that believes they can fool them is fooling themselves," the director said.
