FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Loud banging noises being heard around Fair Lawn over the past week could be coming from a power substation across the river in Paterson, authorities said.

Patrol officers confirmed that a blown transformer caused a loud bang to reverberate across the west side of Fair Lawn on Sunday night, Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler told Daily Voice, adding that he wouldn't be surprised if it's continuing.

"Whenever there is a loud noise in Paterson it always drifts into Fair Lawn," the sergeant said Thursday.

The only other culprit would be somebody setting off M80 fireworks, but Metzler said there's no evidence of that.

A new grid was being installed at the PSE&G plant in Paterson, Fair Lawn Mayor John Cosgrove said.

Cosgrove told Daily Voice that he will have his manager reach out to the utility to find out more about what happened and what can be done.

According to National Geographic's Energy Blog , transformers are more likely to explode when subjected to cold weather.

Residents offered guesses:

Chad Seligman suggested a possible earthquake, underground sewer system tests, Godzilla coming out of the Passaic River or "fracking in Paterson" on Facebook.

"The Universe Being Re-Created?" wrote Rick Godley.

"Frost quakes?" asked Donald J. DeBruin.

"Sorry, I dropped my wallet," Glenn Lydon added.

"Since no one knows what it is, and I don't want to alarm my children or myself, I've been saying it's the trains connecting and unconnecting," Kristal Renn wrote.

If blown transformers in Paterson are responsible, Metzler said, there isn't much Fair Lawn police can do.
