PROSPECT PARK, N.J. – A 16-year-old front-seat passenger in a car stopped for a noisy muffler was carrying a fully-loaded handgun reported stolen out of Florida, Prospect Park police said Thursday.
Officers who pulled over the 2004 Honda Accord on Haledon Avenue and Kossuth Street late Tuesday found the .380 Bersa Thunder handgun with seven full-metal jacket rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber, said Capt. Ammen Matari.
It had been reported stolen out of Orlando, he said.
Police filed a delinquency complaint against the teen charging him with weapons offenses and receiving stolen property. He was taken to the Essex County Detention Center pending a hearing in the Family Division of Superior Court.
