The cuts result from the same fiscal crisis that forced the district to lay off more than 300 employees last spring, including about 170 teachers, the website said.
According to district spokeswoman Terry Corallo, in order to submit a balanced budget, the district needed to make difficult decisions with regards to reductions in staff and programs and this includes the athletics program, northjersey.com said.
School board president Jonathan Hodges said he has not yet received formal notification of the elimination of the Eastside wrestling and tennis teams, but added that he has asked for a comprehensive list of all programs being affected by the spending cuts, northjersey.com said.
Corallo said about 20 students participated in the Eastside wrestling program. Numbers were not available for the school's boys and girls tennis team, both of which are being eliminated, northjersey.com said.
Officials did not provide a specific breakdown on how much money would be saved by cutting the wrestling and tennis teams, northjersey.com said.
