Officer Injured By Woman Dining And Dashing In Hicksville, Police Say
A Long Island woman allegedly skipped out on a meal and injured a police officer who tried to arrest her in Hicksville, authorities announced on Wednesday, May 28.
Ruoqiong Shi, 29, of Plainview, ordered and ate at Potasia, a restaurant on 600 S. Oyster Bay Road, around 3:50 p.m., but left without paying, Nassau County detectives said.
Officers found Shi nearby a short time later. When they attempted to take her into custody, she allegedly became violent, injuring an officer’s arm and leg, police said. Both the officer and Shi were transported to local hospitals for evaluation.

A fire that killed two dogs and a cat inside a Plainview home led to the arrest of a tenant on arson and animal cruelty charges, Nassau County Police announced on Tuesday, May 27.
Jahan Kia, 40, is accused of setting a blaze inside the basement stairwell of a home on Eileen Avenue around 7:50 p.m. on Monday, May 26, according to a release from the Arson Bomb Squad.
Firefighters from Bethpage and surrounding departments responded quickly and extinguished the flames. No people were inside the residence at the time, but two dogs and a cat were found dead, police said.

John Purdue, of Uniondale, was operating a 2018 Nissan Murano westbound when he struck the rear driver’s side of a 2012 Toyota minivan around 1:58 p.m., according to the department's Homicide Squad. He was identified on Friday, April 4.
Detectives said the minivan, operated by a 44-year-old man, was making a left onto Old Country Road from the South Oyster Bay Expressway when it was hit.

Journalist and author Richard Cohen has died after inspiring countless people through his decades-long battle with MS and cancer.
Cohen, the husband of former TODAY anchor Meredith Vieira, died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, TODAY reported. The Plainview, New York, native was 76 years old.
A veteran reporter, Cohen lived with multiple sclerosis for more than 50 years and overcame two cancer diagnoses during his life. He was also legally blind.

Authorities have identified a man who police say was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Long Island on New Year's Day.
Kevin Lawry, 38, of Plainview, was identified as the victim struck by 39-year-old Veronica Marmol, of College Point, Queens, heading east in a Jeep Wrangler at Old Country Road and Floral Avenue, just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, as previously reported by Daily Voice.
Marmol did not stop and continued heading east, leaving Lawry seriously injured at the scene, according to police. Lawry was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A 39-year-old Queens, NY woman has been charged in connection with a crash that claimed the life of a 38-year-old pedestrian on Long Island on New Year's, authorities said.
Veronica Marmol, of College Point, was behind the wheel of a 2018 Jeep Wrangler heading east when she struck the man on Old Country Road near Floral Avenue in Plainview, just before 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, Nassau County police said.

A Long Island woman has been accused of stealing nearly $340,000 from her employee.
An extensive investigation revealed that Elizabeth Stern, age 52, of Hicksville, was responsible for stealing from her former employer, Superior Air Condition & Heating Systems Inc., in Plainview.
Detectives state that over 18 months, Stern paid off her personal credit cards with checks that were stolen from the victim, totaling approximately $301,958.
