"I don't know if it was exhaustion," Paterson Fire Chief Michael Postorino told Daily Voice. "He was being treated and then evaluated and then taken to the hospital."

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Postorino said.

The building was vacant when it began around 1:30 p.m., the chief said. Utilities at the two buildings next to where the fire started needed to be shut down, he said.

An unknown number of people were displaced from the two neighboring buildings, Postorino said.

"The one in the middle's a total loss," he said.
